Easing personal node operations: Vitalik's new Ethereum expansion proposal
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced a new roadmap on the 19th to address the Layer 1 (L1) scalability issues of Ethereum (ETH). The plan centers around a new concept called "partially stateless nodes," which aims to facilitate node operations even with high gas limits.
Mr. Buterin pointed out that "the most common criticism of increasing L1 gas limits is that it makes operating full nodes difficult, beyond concerns about network security." Full nodes play a crucial role in allowing users to access the blockchain in a "trustless, censorship-resistant, and privacy-conscious manner." (If the gas limit is higher, more transactions can be processed.)
As a short-term priority, the implementation of 'EIP-4444', which limits the historical data stored by nodes to 36 days, the construction of a decentralized historical data storage solution, and gas price adjustments to make storage more expensive and execution cheaper were mentioned. In the medium term, a plan was also presented to reduce the storage requirements of nodes by about 50% through "stateless validation."
What is a state?
The "state" of the blockchain. For example, one account holds. Refers to the balance held, and when this account makes a transfer, the state will be updated.
The core of the new proposal is the "partial stateless Node," which has the potential to increase the L1 gas limit by 10 to 100 times. This Node has the capability to verify blocks and validate the entire chain without storing all data, designed to retain only the data subset chosen by users.
Examples of settings include "all states excluding spam contracts", "states related to EOA, SCW, and common ERC20 and ERC721 tokens and applications", and "EOA, SCW, some ERC20 tokens, and selected DeFi and privacy applications accessed in the past two years". This allows users to achieve a balance between local access to necessary data and privacy protection.
What is local?
In the IT field, "local" refers to devices and networks such as personal computers that are in the user's hands, as well as the utilization environment. It is often the case that it refers to devices that are not connected to a network.
This new approach aims to achieve significant scalability improvements for Ethereum while maintaining security and decentralization, thereby lowering the barriers for individuals to operate Nodes.
